One hurdle faced in developing electronic product definition exchange is the creation of an architecture of ''roadmap'' that clearly shows the relationship of the various components. This paper describes an architecture developed round the premise that form features will play a key role in the communication process among design, analysis, manufacturing, and inspection in Computer Integrated Manufacturing systems of the future. The paper details the Form Features-Centered Architecture and lists some views on form features by the Product Definition Initiative within the Department of Energy. 6 refs., 9 figs. The concept of intelligent integrated interactive computer aided design (CAD) systems is proposed. A language based on predicate logic and the object oriented programming paradigm is introduced: the mechanisms of the system are described in this language. The possibility to describe and organize design knowledge using this language is assessed, and it is shown how design knowledge should work and be embedded in an intelligent, integrated, and interactive CAD environment.

An overview of the University of Utah Video-computer Courseware Implementation System (VCIS) programs is presented. A tutorial is included which is designed to provide an author with enough knowledge to create a simple lesson containing test and graphic frames. VCIS was used in creating two tutorials, which exercise most of the functions in the authoring system. One tutorial is only text and is an introduction to the Berkeley UNIX operating system and its vieditur. The other tutorial contains both text and graphics and is an introduction to Very Large Scale Integrated (VLSI) circuit design.

One sub-project within the Testbed is the effort to establish an Application Protocol Development Environment (APDE). The report documents the requirements for an APDE. The Drafting Systems organization at Bendix, Kansas City Division, is responsible for the creation of computer-readable media used for producing photoplots, phototools, and production traveler illustrations. From 1977 when the organization acquired its first Applicon system, until 1982 when the off-line graphics processing system was added, the production of Gerber photoplotter tapes and APPLE files presented an ever increasing load on the Applicon systems. This paper describes how the organization is now using a VAX to offload this work from the Applicon systems and presents the techniques used to automate the flow of data from the Applicon sources to the final users. To meet Sandia's engineering challenges it is crucial that we shorten the product realization process. The challenge of RRW is to produce exceptional high quality designs and respond to changes quickly. Computer aided design models are an important element in realizing these objectives. Advances in the use of three dimensional geometric models on the Reliable Robust Warhead (RRW) activity have resulted in business advantage. This approach is directly applicable to other programs within the Laboratories. This paper describes the RRW approach and rationale. Keys to this approach are defined operational states that indicate a pathway for greater model-based realization and responsive infrastructure.
